The Shack by William P. Young |
|
Rating: 4 Stars |
I enjoyed this book, even though it seemed a little preachy to me at some points. I was determined to finish it because of some of the comments I've been seeing and I'm glad I did. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say there's a twist near the end of the book that makes the whole story totally believable. |

Getting Things Done by David Allen |
|
Rating: 5 Stars |
The biggest thing I took from this book was how to look at getting things done. (1) You ask yourself, "What's the next action?"; (2) Set deadlines; (3) Set start dates; and (4) Do one 15-minute item each day. Excellent guidelines! |

Blackwater by Jeremy Scahill |
|
Rating: 5 Stars |
An informative must read for every American. It provides insight into how “private military contractors” (mercenaries) recruit and operate. It reveals how Blackwater and similar corporations are depleting the human resources of military forces, and federal law agencies to build their employee database and lease their services to the federal government and other governments around the world that are currently at war.
It also explains how Blackwater and other corporations selling "security services" recruit mercenaries from third-world nations and pay the recruits bottom rate wages to provide services in Iraq.
It shows how the federal government granted immunity to "private military contractors”, effectively allowing them to operate in Iraq without fear of being held responsible for any war crimes or human rights violations that military personnel are prosecuted for committing.
All concerned citizens should read Blackwater and hold their congressmen accountable for the lack of governmental oversight concerning the “private military industry” and their actions. |

Beyond This Moment by Tamera Alexander |
|
Rating: 5 Stars |
This story, set in late 19th-century Colorado, challenges readers to think about honesty, sin and grace in the midst of a compelling story. We follow Dr. Molly Whitcomb as she moves from a college professorship in Georgia to a one-room schoolhouse teacher in Colorado. Leaving to escape difficult circumstances, Molly deliberately lies and then is forced to deal with the consequences of those lies. Alexander has given readers a beautiful picture of the grace of God that is greater than all our sin and a reminder to be compassionate to those brothers and sisters who are struggling in their faith. And, as a cherry on top, it's well written and witty. |
