February 2008

Last contest period's winner received MONDAY NIGHT JIHAD by Jason Elam and Steve Yohn and LADY OF MILKWEED MANOR by Julie Klassen.

Joan

Dawn's Light by Terri Blackstock

Rating: 5 Stars

This is the first of the Restoration Series and it was a thought-provoking novel. It may seem a little far-fetched, with electricity going out all over the world but it certainly gives us an idea that some day, we may have to cope with the lack of modern day-facilities and go back to life the way it used to be. There is also a murder mystery thrown in. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

Between Sundays by Karen Kingsbury

Rating: 4 Stars

Although she has many books out there, somehow I have not read many of Karen Kingsbury's books. This was great! It was an easy read that I finished in two sittings. You can kind of figure out how it's going to end up pretty easily, but I still enjoyed it.

Becki

A Time To Dance by Karen Kingsbury

Rating: 5 Stars

A great read, plus it helped remind me how easy it can be to get busy and grow apart in marriage. I was encouraged through this book to look at my own marriage with fresh eyes and keep communication open.

Betty

Magdalene by Angela Hunt

Rating: 4 Stars

My knowledge of this friend of Jesus was nil until I read this book.

Sue

This Present Darkeness by Frank Peretti

Rating: 5 Stars

This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read. It is a fictional account of a major spiritual battle that goes on in a small town. You have to read this book --- it will definitely change the way you fight your battles!!

Sally

The Measure of a Lady by Deeanne Gist

Rating: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book! If you like historical fiction, I definitely think you should read this awesome book, set in the time of the California gold rush.

Debbie Deskin

The Angels of Morgan Hill by Donna VanLiere

Rating: 5 Stars

This was a wonderful book full of hope and spirit. It was so lovely and sweet. It is a must read for everyone.

Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible by Liz Curtis Higgs

Rating: 5 Stars

An awesome, thought-provoking author. Her book reads like your're sitting down for coffee with her. I am sure if you ever did meet me her she would offer that cup of tea and conversation. She is obviously very learned, but her style is casual and light though content is very relevant, interesting and educational. Liz draws great parallels between the "Bad girls" of the Bible and us in this day in age. I started with this book after reading a chapter then I went out and bough the rest of the "bad girls" series.

Laura

The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz

Rating: 4 Stars

Excellent book!

Hannah

Fair Game by Elizabeth White

Rating: 5 Stars

It's funny, romantic, and a little bit suspenseful at times, and definitely Christian! What more could you ask for?

Cynthia Harney

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Rating: 5 Stars

In April 1992, a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet and invented a new life for himself. Four monthsl later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. This has just become a movie, but read the book first. I purchase the 1996 edition in a yard sale for $0.10, and what a deal. I think it goes with the way Christopher had taught me how to look at life in a different light.

The Copper Scroll by Joel C. Rosenberg

Rating: 5 Stars

Another Dead Sea Scroll has been discovered, and this time, it contains a code leading to great treasures. As plans emerge to rebuild the Third Jewish Temple in the Middle East, scientists who know about the scroll are mysteriously killed. This conservative political thriller is a follow-up to THE EZEKIEL OPTION.

Sister Chicks Say Ooh La La by Robin Jones Gunn

Rating: 5 Stars

A wonderful inspirational novel, fifth or sixth in the series, about a pair of friends --- women in their 40s --- who fulfill a promise to each other by going to Paris. While there, they both face fears of their own, and with the help of the other's love and friendship, overcome them. While they are stand-alone books, each one in the series has a cameo appearance by one of the women in the previous book. An up-lifting, enchanting series. I don't want to miss a single one.

The Road Home by Tommy Tenney

Rating: 4 Stars

Very good read! Imagine being on the road with modern-day Naomi and Ruth from Las Vegas, NV to Lancaster County Pennsylvania. We travel along the miles with these two as they have many mishaps and misadventures en route to "home". I enjoyed this book immensely, and thoroughly enjoyed the retelling of the bible characters. Tenney really made the characters "real" and believable.

D. Lohrding

A Version of the Truth by Jennifer Kaufman & Karen Mack

Rating: 4 Stars

This book has caused me to laugh out loud in the most unlikely places .... like at the gym.
It's a good, heart-warming, fun, easy read book..."ghwferb!"

Veta L

Winter Birds by Jamie Langston Turner

Rating: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book. It is written almost journal like, recording the thoughts of an elderly woman in her last years. It is thought provoking, giving a sense of understanding in how older women look back at life in this world and forward in anticipation of the next.

Sheryl S. Golden

Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin

Rating: 5 Stars

It was hard to put this one down. A very emotional read.

Dorothy

Doesn't She Look Natural? by Angela Hunt

Rating: 4 Stars

A quirky and well-written light read. The main character inherits a funeral business in a very small town. Humorous and fun.

Chocolatherapy by Karen Scalf Linamen

Rating: 3 Stars

I had so looked forward to reading this book, but when I finally did, I found myself a bit disappointed. It wasn't quite what I'd expected.

This book was good, and did have a lot that I could relate to (like pigging out on junk foods). But, it also had a lot that I found myself unable to relate to --- like the author's talk of her prior divorce, and how she was coping with the after-effects.

I recommend this book to anyone who's dealt with divorce, as they'd probably get more out of it.

Jenn S.

Psychology Today: Secrets of Successful Weight Los by Diana Burrell

Rating: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book (loaned from the library), and intend to later get a copy for myself. It detailed all the different diet plans out there without recommending one or another. Then it gave tips on how to come up with your own plan, and how to stick to it.

Exercise and eating healthy were mentioned, and there was a whole chapter devoted to the different medical problems related to obesity. Highly recommended, especially as a reference, for anyone struggling with their weight or health.

Pamela-Faith

The Way Of The Wild Heart by John Eldredge

Rating: 4 Stars

Mr. Eldredge spoke prophetically into my life as a single mother of a 26-year-old son. The way he outlines the stages of male maturation mirrors experiences in my own family. Through Eldredge's observations, a father is critical, and I am blessed to have a God-fearing father and brother who have always supported my son --- even when they were geographically and spiritually miles apart.

Brittanie

My Name is Russell Fink by Michael Snyder

Rating: 5 Stars

This book is so funny. I absolutely loved it.

Linda

Maggie by Charles Martin

Rating: 5 Stars

Charles Martin has written another beautiful tale. This sequel to THE DEAD DON'T DANCE picks up where that one left off, as Maggie and Dylan struggle to cope with their past sorrow and find their way to their future.

Linda

Healing Stones by Nancy Rue & Steve Arterburn

Rating: 5 Stars

I could not put this compelling book down. These 2 authors have joined together to pen a powerful and convicting story of grace, forgiveness and second chances, beginning with accepting God's forgiveness for ourselves and then extending that grace to others.
